Sitting down and getting off of your feet should be a relaxing venture, but as any sufferer of chronic back pain knowns, being in a cramped sitting position can put a lot of pressure on your spine. This includes being in a car for any length of time. Often the seats in a car don't provide the proper support for your lower back. When you're planning a road trip or anticipate doing a lot of driving, there are a few precautions you can take to decrease your discomfort.

  • Check into the different types of pillows, cushions and blankets made specifically to provide different types of back support in the car. Even rolling up a small blanket and placing it behind your lower back will often make your position more comfortable.

  • Wrapping an ice pack in a towel or thin blanket and placing it between your back and the seat can ease back pain, and your sitting position will wedge it in place. In a pinch, a bag of frozen vegetables will work, and will also form ergonomically against the curve of your back.

  • Remove anything that might be inhibiting your movement or comfort, such as a pocket-full of keys or a bulky wallet. Give yourself some space!

  • If nothing else, schedule some time every 30 minutes or so to get out and stretch, especially if you're considering a long road trip. If you can't find a rest stop where you can stroll around, just hit a gas station and do some stretches and take some deep breaths while standing.
